The Italian Manager was sacked few days after the FA cup final defeat to Roberto Martinez's Wigan Athletic
Former English champions Manchester City announced the sacking of their Italian manager in the aftermath of their FA cup final defeat to Wigan Athletic. Much had been said about Mancini's future before the game with some section of the media saying his sack didn't depend on winning the Fa cup.
The Italian who replaced Mark Hughes as manager of the Citizens during 2009/2010 season lead city to 2 FA cup finals and winning one, one community shield title and one English Premier league trophy.
Despite winning the league last year, the city hierarchy decided that getting rid of him was the only solution after a trophyless season. But the writing was on the wall as soon as Mancini fell out with Txiki Bergirstain, Sorriano and Brian Marwood.
Both Txiki and Sorriano were part of the Barcelona setup that ruled Europe under Pep Guardiola and are fans of Spanish style of football "tiki-taka" which Mancini does not play. The City directors would feel they were right to let go of the Italian gaffer, as he could only deliver a disappointing second place in both the FA cup and EPL, and a disappointing first round elimination in the Champions league. But Mancini also has a case for himself, after Brian Marwood failed to deliver his transfer targets in the summer.
Mancini made Robin Van Persie is major target in the summer as well as Javi Martinez and Danielle De Rossi, but City failed to acquire any of them and instead got him Jack Rodwell, Matij Najtasic, Maicon, Scott Sinclair and Javi Garcia. Losing Robin Van Persie to near rivals United made sure Fergie's men won the title with four games to spare. England midfielder, Jack Rodwell has spent majority of the season on the injury table, as well as Brazilian Maicon. Scott Sinclair has had a very poor season, Javi Garcia has done quite well but didn't produce the same level of performance Martinez or De Rossi would have produced.
Of all five signings only Najtasic has stood up to be counted as premier league material.
We also have the issue of lack goals from the strikers with Super sub Dzeko being the club's top scorer and poor performances from players like Samir Nasri, Joe Hart and Gareth Barry. Influential players such as Silva, Yaya Toure had poor starts to the season, while Captain and defender Kompany was injured for the better part of the campaign. All these factors contributed to the team having a poor season, and Mancini took the fall for it being the manager.
Basically, the only problem I had with Mancini was the inability to keep his dressing room order as he fell out with some of his players, and the inability to motivate his team this season after winning the league the previous season.
The Citizens have missed a good opportunity to wrestle the title back from their rivals, Manchester United, who lost Sir Alex Ferguson to retirement and are in the process of starting a new era under David Moyes would obviously take sometime. This would have given City the upper hand in the title race next year if they also weren't changing managers, as they would have had an experienced manager in Mancini and a highly motivated squad needing one or two faces.
Former Madrid gaffer, Manuel Pellegrini is the odds-on favorite to become Man City's new manager after his good work with Malaga but City's directors should not forget the Chilean won nothing with the Los Merengues after about 200million Euros was spent on new recruits. The City board will be hoping he brings the Spanish style of football to the Etihad and he's able to look inward to promote their youth setup.
